As our world leaders assemble for COP 26, the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, in Glasgow (31 October – 12 November), there is a rapidly growing recognition at all levels of the magnitude and urgency of the human-made climate crisis affecting our planet. This is also a key theme for CSES as part of its series of spotlight topics, which include sustainability.

This is a complex and vast topic, but two key areas that must be addressed include greenhouse gas emissions and energy security. The transition to a net-zero carbon economy, in response to these challenges, is necessarily a gradual process but needs to happen as quickly as possible. To achieve this, we need to look at the role that each component in our energy mix will have to play in the short, medium and long term.

Brought to you by CSES, ARU and the Bradwell B Project – building Britain’s newest nuclear power station here in Essex – this event will explore the role of nuclear power in a net-zero carbon economy, how this can work alongside other technologies, and what goes into evaluating and mitigating the environmental impact of such large infrastructure projects throughout their lifecycle.

This will be a hybrid event, taking place simultaneously at ARU and with a virtual audience joining remotely. This is a format we hope to roll out to future events. Due to social distancing constraints, capacity in the ARU lecture theatre is limited and spaces are available on a first-come-first-served basis. When registering, you will be notified if online attendance is the only available option.

IMPORTANT: The ARU campus is subject to a 1-metre social distancing rule. Please observe this if you choose to attend in-person. We ask that you wear a face covering if you can do so. Note that the closest car park on-site is the Mildmay Car Park, accessible from the north entrance to the campus off Chelmer Valley Road.

Agenda

19:00 – Arrival of guests and virtual attendees

Light refreshments will be served for those attending in-person.

19:30 – Welcome, introduction and explanation of format

19:35 – Keynote address from Neil Burke (Senior Planning & Consents Manager, Bradwell B)

In this talk, Neil will discuss the role of nuclear to meet net zero and how it can work alongside other low carbon technologies to provide a reliable, secure and resilient energy system. He will also explore the process for understanding environmental impacts and benefits.

Neil Burke is the Senior Planning & Consents Manager for Bradwell B, the proposed new nuclear power station in Essex. He is responsible for ensuring all planning and environmental requirements are met in the development of the project, this involves working closely with statutory parties and the local communities to understand the potential impacts on the people and wildlife, and where they live, and developing mitigation for these potential impacts.

Prior to working at Bradwell B, Neil was the Head of Planning, Consents and Permits for Horizon Nuclear Power for their Wylfa project.

Neil is an expert in delivering environmental permissions applications for large scale developments for the UK and overseas, across sectors including conventional power, renewables, nuclear new build and nuclear decommissioning, as well as a wide range of heavy industries and manufacturing.

All audience members will be invited to submit questions and comments throughout the talk.

20:30 – Interactive audience poll and introduction of panellists

Panel to include:

  • Neil Burke, Senior Planning & Consents Manager, Bradwell B
  • Dr Saruhan Mosler, Senior Lecturer, MA Landscape Architecture and MA Garden Design Course Manager, Writtle University College
  • Alison Turnbull, Founder, Alison Turnbull Associates
  • Alastair Evans, Director of Corporate and Government Affairs, Rolls-Royce SMR Consortium
  • Syed Hasan, Head of School for Engineering and Built Environment, Anglia Ruskin University

20:55 – Q&A session with panel

The CSES facilitator will take live questions from the real and virtual floors and introduce questions / comments submitted using the digital channels.

21:00 – Close

Further information

Bradwell B is a proposed new nuclear power station at Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex. It is being progressed by joint partners CGN and EDF Energy.

The Bradwell B power station will generate enough clean, low carbon electricity to power around four million homes, helping the UK to achieve its net-zero carbon commitments.

Bradwell B will build on the long-established history of nuclear power in the area, creating low carbon, high quality jobs for over 60 years and significant business and training opportunities for the region.

This event is open to, and intended for, all family members. We would be glad to receive group bookings from schools; please contact us if you wish to make a group booking larger than that permitted by the online registration form.
